Our story…

This is one of the most beautiful places on earth we think, and we hope you will too. My husband and I bought this 11 acre paradise 20 years ago after many years searching, with the aim of giving the regenerating bush a hand and planting thousands of native trees, thanks to an ecologist who worked with us and a local couple who’ve worked tirelessly over the years.

We are in a kiwi zone, and have joined with our local environment group, and neighbours to protect our precious native  birds from predators.

The only building on the land at the time we bought was a former school room which we renovated so we had a roof over our heads when we came from London. My other half would be the first to admit the first year was a baptism of fire - he had never spent a night in his life off-grid. (I was born and raised in New Zealand but moved abroad and married an Englishman.) But that’s the beauty of where we are on the Coromandel Peninsula; off grid but with all the comforts. Without a hairdryer or air frier…

Harakeke Hut was our ‘home’ several times a year for eight years until we built our dream home further down the drive on the property. Harakeke Hut has become a sanctuary for friends and relatives and we’d now like to extend this rustic but magical place with others who appreciate the natural wild beauty of New Zealand.
